All In The Name

Why I bought corn flakes the other day is beyond me because I usually prefer something with more fiber and maybe a few freeze dried berries thrown in for flavor and color but at any rate I came back home from the store with a huge box of Kellogg's Corn Flakes and as I was getting ready to grab a quick breakfast I was reminded of a funny story my mother told me many years ago.

Seems that she had gone to the old country grocery to buy her monthly female supplies and being quite modest as were most young women of that era, and after surveying the aisles and not seeing the item that had brought her in asked the clerk, an elderly gent in a very low voice if he knew where the Kotex was. Being deaf as a post he answered in a booming voice that "No" he was all out of Corn Flakes but that he did have Wheaties!
Poor Mama. Mortified didn't begin to describe the level of embarassment and humiliation as she thanked him and left with a box of wheaties.
She said that after stopping off at the drug store and finding what she needed that as soon as she got home she couldn't get rid of those darn Wheaties fast enough.
As a child the variety of cereal was limited to say the least and all I can remember coming prepared in a box was Corn Flakes, Wheaties, Cheerios, Rice Krispies and Shredded Wheat.
I now understand the reason that while growing up we never had a box of Corn Flakes or Wheaties in the house and it probably also explains why the thought of Shredded Wheat turns my stomach. Yuk!
