Famous Writer and Fascinating Facts

"What do we live for if it is not to make life less difficult for each other?"

Yep this folks is George Eliot and George is a SHE. Her real name was Mary Anne Evans and she wrote under the pen name of a man because she wanted to ensure that her works were taken seriously and probably tried to shield her life from public scrutiny as she was involved with a married man. Born Nov. 22 1819 in Warwickshire England, she died Dec. 22 1880 at the age of 61.

She was a leading writer of the Victorian era and her novels, largely set in provincial England, are well known for their realism and psychological insight.

We've come a long way baby!

  2. Interesting, Mollye. And George Sand of France was actually named Aurora.

My great grandmother wrote under a pen name as well. Her work was published in newspapers in the Deep South and also one in NYC. But people knew it was her writing! LOL!

We have, indeed, come a long way!

    XO,

    Sheila :-)
