On The Subject Of Being Poor

I recently read some interesting quotes on Poverty I'd like to share at this time of the year.

"Having been poor is no shame, but being ashamed of it is"
.....................Benjamin Franklin

"The Greatest Man in History was the poorest"
....................Ralph Waldo Emmerson

Isn't this just the truth. I don't know about you but I do remember growing up thinking we just had everything we could ever want or need, but in looking back those times were truly meager. I think it was that our parents taught us to be thankful for what we had. Times are sooooooooo different today. In every aspect things have changed, times have changed, people have also changed. I'm really grateful for what I have today and I try not to take it for granted, but I am also so grateful for having grown up in the fifties and for the lessons I've learned as a result of.

  1. Mollye, this is a very thought provoking post. I was thinking the other day how in the Deep South, quite possibly because so many people were impoverished after the Civil War, that the measure of a man was more important than this pocket book. To that end, I always thought that my grandmother who was widowed and actually on a very strict budget was the richest person alive, and she was because she was rich in love and happiness. Her wealth was her family and friends and above all else, her faith in the Lord. She also enjoyed good health and a happy disposition and was ever grateful for her blessings.

I am grateful for my material blessings, but I am most grateful for the same things for which Granny was grateful. You can't put a price on that. Its worth is intestimable.

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  4. I could not agree more...the lesson today is not that we are poor of "things" we are poor of morals, values, ethics. This is what is so different from years past, we possibly have lost ourselves somewhere in between. IN a world of faster, quicker, cheaper, we possibly don't value the most cherished of all...memories and moments that we create with those around us...

  5. Beautiful post mollye. Wealth shouldn't be measured in what you have, but in how you deal with what you do have. The economy has dealt us all a blow and almost everyone has had to make some type of change in the way they live. Happy thanksgiving, have a great day.
